Job Description:
As an Artisan Electrician UG, you will be integral to our engineering team, supporting the Senior Engineering Foreman in accordance with section 2.9.2 of the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), Act 29 of 1996. You will apply your technical expertise to maintain, install, and commission machinery and equipment, ensuring that all installations meet the highest standards of quality and safety.
Key Responsibilities:
- Maintenance and Repairs: Conduct maintenance, repairs, and fault-finding on a variety of equipment, including winders, fridge plants, batch plants, sewage treatment plants, ventilation fans, overhead cranes, conveyors, substations, mini-substations, and generators.
- Electrical Infrastructure: Maintain and update electrical documentation, including drawings, equipment databases, and datasheets. Perform switching and preventative maintenance on medium voltage (MV) equipment, aligning with established policies and procedures.
- Compliance and Safety: Adhere to health, safety, environmental, and security policies, contributing to a culture of zero harm. Exercise expert judgment in repair, replacement, or upgrade decisions.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of all maintenance activities, ensuring compliance with planned maintenance schedules and engineering needs.
- Team Collaboration: Collaborate effectively with the engineering team to support operational goals and address technical challenges.
Qualifications:
- Educational Requirements: Matriculation / N3 / NQF Level 4 equivalent qualification with Pure Mathematics and Physical Science.
- Trade Certification: Relevant Trade Certificate in Electrician.
- Additional Certification: MQA Medium Voltage (MV) Switching Certificate.
- Driver’s License: Valid EB / Code 8 Driver’s License.
Experience Required:
- Winder Experience: 2-3 years of experience with winders.
- Electrical Maintenance: Minimum of 3 years in electrical maintenance, with at least 2 years in an underground mining environment.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Technical Expertise: In-depth knowledge of motor protection systems, MV electrical safety, switching practices, generators, substations, Simocodes, variable speed drives (VSDs), uninterruptible power supplies (UPSs), and power transformers.
- Operational Knowledge: Experience with winder plant operations and legal examinations.
- Problem-Solving: Proficiency in troubleshooting, repairing, and maintaining electrical systems and major equipment.
- Regulatory Knowledge: Familiarity with Safety, Health, and Environmental legislation and standards applicable to the field.
Additional Requirements:
- Computer Literacy: Proficiency in MS Office Suite.
- Physical Demands: Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and perform shift work, standby duties, callouts, and overtime as required.
- Medical Fitness: Successful completion of a Medical Certificate of Fitness to work underground.
