Job Description:

As a Senior Driller, you will oversee and coordinate all drilling activities to achieve optimal performance. Your role includes supervising drillers, monitoring drilling parameters, and maintaining equipment in line with our strategic maintenance plans. Your expertise will ensure that our marine mining operations meet high standards of efficiency and effectiveness.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Financial Effectiveness:
    • Participate in cost-saving initiatives and adhere to financial procedures.
    • Monitor drilling activities to ensure alignment with budgetary constraints and financial targets.
  • Production Drilling:
    • Supervise drill floor personnel, ensuring adherence to best practices and operational procedures.
    • Train Drillers and Trainee Drillers, enhancing their skills through hands-on training and mentorship.
    • Optimize drilling processes to maximize production and efficiency.
    • Adjust drilling parameters based on seabed conditions, including bit pressures, rotation speeds, and air flow.
  • Maintenance:
    • Plan and manage maintenance requirements, including stock levels and spares for the drill floor.
    • Identify areas for improvement and implement system developments to enhance performance.
    • Record and initiate work requests, ensuring compliance with the planned maintenance system.
  • Team Leadership:
    • Utilize a skill matrix to develop Drillers and Trainee Drillers to senior driller capabilities.
    • Foster a culture of continuous learning and professional development within the team.
  • Innovation:
    • Stay abreast of industry developments and introduce improvements to work processes as needed.
    • Implement new knowledge and techniques to enhance drilling operations and efficiency.
  • People Management:
    • Effectively manage and control subordinates, ensuring optimal utilization of resources.
    • Promote a positive and collaborative work environment.
  • Safety, Health, Security, and Environmental Effectiveness:
    • Adhere to and promote company safety, security, and environmental policies and procedures.
    • Contribute to a culture of safety and compliance, ensuring all activities meet legislative and organizational standards.
  • Effective Stakeholder Management:
    • Collaborate with colleagues to achieve company objectives and enhance operational efficiency.
    • Build strong relationships across the De Beers Pipeline by sharing information and knowledge.

Qualifications:

  • Educational Requirements:
    • Grade 12 or N3 with Mathematics and Science.
    • In-house driller training and Artisan certificate.

Experience Required:

  • Rotary Drilling Experience: Minimum of 5 years in an offshore mining environment.
  • Supervisory Experience: Preferred experience in a supervisory role.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Extensive knowledge of rotary drilling techniques and marine mining operations.
  • Proficiency in optimizing drilling parameters and maintaining drill equipment.
  • Strong understanding of safety, health, and environmental legislation and standards applicable to marine operations.
  • Excellent leadership and people management skills, with a focus on team development and performance improvement.

Additional Requirements:

  • Computer Literacy: Proficiency in relevant software applications and tools.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to work in a marine environment, including the capability to handle physically demanding tasks.
  • Clearances: Successful completion of a police clearance and background screening is preferred.

Background Checks:

Successful candidates will be required to undergo background screening, including criminal checks and verification of qualifications.

This role is open to individuals with the requisite qualifications and experience, including a police clearance if applicable.
